Volunteering is the act of freely offering to perform a task or service. Majority of the time when a person engages in a voluntary activity, he/she expects nothing in return.
Volunteering takes many forms where people who take part in it do so based on their training backgrounds, such as: education, medicine, or search and rescue. In addition, today most people volunteer in response to natural disasters. These disasters include; Haiti earthquake, Indian Ocean tsunami, Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Social issues such as the AIDS pandemic in Africa, hunger and famine are also opportunities where organizations such as the Red Cross and individuals volunteer.
Some of the reasons people volunteer is self fulfillment where the individual gets to make a difference in the community around and world. This helps a person to look beyond his or her problems and give back to those around.
